Why do some people emerge from backgrounds of trauma, pain and deprivation to become giving, caring members of society, while others from perfectly “normal” families go on to commit acts of great cruelty? What makes a criminal, and what shapes his or her crimes? When we plumb the dark recesses of the human psyche, what can we find that helps us understand our own humanity, and our own inner darkness?
As a paralegal and mediator, I see within the legal system one set of humankind’s best and worst qualities – grace and generosity, callousness and avarice, truth and deception, cruelty and redemption.
